North American Hunting
Barren Ground Grizzly

This rare species of Grizzly is one of the hardest to collect of the North American species. It's range is fairly limited, being mostly the Arctic coastal area down to the tree line and east across the Barrens.

Although only recently recognized as a separate species, our outfitter has been hunting this resident of the central barren grounds and the Arctic coast for twenty years. This rare species of Grizzly is one of the hardest to collect of the North American species. Its range is fairly limited, being mostly the Arctic coastal area down to the tree line and east across the Barrens. In size, this bear compares well with any inland grizzly and comes in several color phases…it is a splendid trophy.

After having explored every possible combination of legal season, weather conditions and method of hunting, our outfitter has come up with a system that solves the old problem of being in the right place at the right time. Although not the cheapest method, it is by far the easiest and most successful.

HUNT SCHEDULE

Spring hunting is best achieved during a very short window of opportunity between when the big males come out of den and before the snow is gone from the high country. You travel with your guide by snowmobile sled, camp out in small tents and hunt by glassing from the ridges and following tracks when appropriate. Success is normally very high and the enjoyment of traveling during the long days of spring make it an adventure to remember.
Approximate Dates: April 25 – May 20 (10 day Hunt)

Early autumn hunting is done by boat travel on the coast. A window of opportunity exists between when the season opens in mid August until the winds of autumn make ocean travel too dangerous. North of the Arctic Circle bears become prime early and they go to den early. A hunt at this time of year will produce an excellent trophy. Fly in to Yellowknife and spend the night. Travel to main base in Kugluktuk, arriving around noon on August 15th. You will then depart by boat and hunt back to base by August 24. Depart on August 25th.
NOTE: Hunters are usually successful early and are able to depart early.
Dates: Mid August – End of August
